If you’re interested in understanding religion, you’ve probably already heard about Animism, Buddhism, and Christianity. Depending on your point of view, you might have even heard of Totemism or Animism. No matter which path you take, you’ll find that each of these beliefs has a unique meaning. But how do you tell which one is best for you? Here are some of the common questions asked about religion.
Animism
Animism is a belief system in which humans worship spirits and ancestors. In animism, everything has a soul and a spirit. As such, animists believe that their actions have a spiritual significance and seek protection from these beings. Animists observe certain taboos and recognize certain actions or people as sacred. These beliefs and practices were first practiced in the Palaeolithic era.
Totemism
Historically, totemism has been considered an early stage of human religious development. Its existence has been inferred by many writers who assumed exogamy is inherent to Totemism. In contrast, Hill-Tout has argued that exogamy is only a secondary or accidental totem marriage bar. There are many controversies over the origin of exogamy. This article looks at the controversies surrounding this ancient practice.
Christianity
The basic doctrines of Christianity are: God is the creator, man is sinful and salvation comes through Christ, the Son of God. God is love, and we are created in His image. In the Bible, God speaks of the Trinity as three persons – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Nicene Creed enumerates the Christian beliefs about the Holy Trinity. Christians believe that Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead.
Buddhism
The philosophy of Buddhism is a systematic exercise of spirituality, which offers the means for achieving self-fulfillment, supraperson awareness, and enlightenment. Buddhism adherents strive to achieve nirvana (the state of enlightenment) through the teachings of the Buddha, who lived during the 6th century BC. The doctrine of Buddhism rejects the concept of a personal god, and emphasizes morality, meditation, wisdom, and enlightened living.
Atheism
Atheism is the rejection of belief in all deities and the absence of any deity. According to atheists, there is no God, nor is there any reason for anyone to believe in a deity. Atheists reject all religious practices and beliefs. Their main concern is the nature of the universe and human beings. The existence of a creator is incomprehensible. However, atheists can accept that there is an underlying order to the universe.
Agnosticism
Some people hold that there is no God, or that God does not exist. They think human reason is not sufficient to support belief in the existence of God. Others, such as anabaptists, believe that the existence of God is unknowable, and that this fact is illogical. Still others believe that a God exists but do not know how or why it exists. Whatever the case, both sides are equally wrong.
