Home Improvement Trends for 2023

Home improvement is the process of renovating and remodeling an existing home. It can include repair work, maintenance, additions and improvements such as replacing appliances, painting, refinishing woodwork, remodeling the bathroom or kitchen, adding decks and patios, changing windows and doors, putting in new carpet or landscaping. In some cases, it can also mean improving the energy efficiency of the house, installing security systems or making safety improvements.

A house is often a long-term investment, and homeowners want to ensure that any renovations or remodeling projects will increase the value of their homes. But it’s important to remember that not all home improvements will add value. In fact, some projects can actually detract from a home’s resale value. So, how do you know if a project is worth the risk?

Experts agree that the biggest trends in home improvement in 2023 will be updates to improve a home’s energy efficiency. These projects will save money on utility bills and may even help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Other popular projects will be those that increase a home’s curb appeal. These projects might involve landscaping, such as planting new trees and shrubs or removing overgrown ones. It’s important to consider a potential buyer when selecting which trees to remove. “Some trees, such as oaks, female ginkgo biloba, sweet gum, locust and eastern white pine can have a negative impact on resale,” said Beasley. “If a home is surrounded by these types of trees, they can decrease the amount of light that enters a property and can make it look dark and uninviting.”

While many people enjoy doing DIY projects, Gordon warned against getting too carried away. “Over-personalization is a big one,” he says. “I’ve seen many DIY jobs that are not good for resale.” Instead, he recommends hiring a professional the first time around. “Then, you can be part of the process and learn from the contractor.”

There are plenty of low-cost projects that can increase a home’s value. Painting, re-grouting tile and power washing can all be done easily and for a fraction of the cost of hiring someone to do it for you. Just be sure to choose a professional with the proper licenses and insurance.
